What’s In My Golf Bag
When I first started playing golf, I didn’t have a full set of clubs. I had a driver, a hybrid, a wedge, and a putter. That was it. I didn’t know what I was missing. I just knew I enjoyed being out on the course. As I kept playing, started adding clubs and essentials to my bag. Each new addition made the game feel a little easier and a lot more fun. I’m still learning, but I’ve built a beginner-friendly bag that gives me confidence every time I play. Here’s what I currently carry and why each piece matters.
Driver
The driver is probably the most intimidating club in your golf bag, but it’s also one of the most fun to hit. As a beginner, there’s nothing better than hitting a solid drive and seeing the ball fly straight down the fairway. It doesn’t happen every time, but when it does, it keeps you coming back. Having a driver you feel comfortable swinging makes a huge difference. You don’t need the newest or most expensive one. You just need something a little forgiving and easy to control. Confidence off the tee sets the tone for the rest of the hole.
I started off with a driver from a brand called Alien. It worked well for me in the beginning but I after playing for about a year I knew it was time for an upgrade. I wanted something that would be reliable and last me a long time but wasn’t too pricy.
After spending tons of time doing research I decided on the Taylormade Stealth 2. Buying this new would have been a little out of my budget so I looked on some second hand websites. I found a great deal from Second Swing for the driver and ended up buying from there. It shipped pretty quickly and once I tried it out I knew I made the right decision.

Irons
For the first few months, I didn’t even have irons. A few months into playing I was at a used sports store and found a full iron set for $50. Someone at the store told me they were a knockoff of a popular iron model made a long time ago so I couldn’t even look up reviews. They looked old and I wasn’t sure how good they would be but I figured I would give it a shot.
Since I never really hit irons before it took some practice but I started hitting them pretty well after a few rounds. Suddenly, I had clubs designed for different distances, and I felt like I could actually play the game properly. Irons are the core of your bag because you use them on almost every hole.
Choosing the right iron set is one of the most important decisions for your golf bag. Here’s an article breaking down how you can make the right choice.
Hybrid
The hybrid quickly became one of my favorite clubs in my golf bag. It’s much easier to hit than long irons and is incredibly useful for longer shots from the fairway or rough. I started off with a Taylormade Rescue 3 hybrid and haven’t even thought about changing it. Whenever I have a difficult shot and don’t feel confident with an iron, I often reach for the hybrid. It’s one of the most beginner-friendly clubs you can carry and can save you in a lot of situations.

Wedge
The wedge is essential for short shots around the green. When you miss the green, which happens a lot as a beginner, your wedge is what helps you recover. Learning how to hit basic chip shots with a wedge can lower your scores quickly. It’s also one of the easiest clubs to practice with and can help you build confidence in your short game. I only use a 56 degree wedge right now. I am thinking about adding a 60 degree this summer.
Putter
The putter is the most used club in the bag. No matter how well or poorly you hit the ball, you always end up on the green eventually. Putting can be frustrating, but it’s also one of the easiest areas to improve with practice. Having a putter that feels comfortable in your hands helps you stay relaxed and focused. Even as a beginner, making a few good putts can completely change your experience during a round. I got a old Taylormade putter from a friend for free which has been great for me.
Golf Glove
The golf glove was one of the first accessories I realized was important. It improves grip and prevents the club from slipping during your swing. It also helps prevent blisters, especially when you’re practicing a lot. More than anything, putting the glove on makes you feel ready to play. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference in comfort and confidence. I always make sure to keep an extra glove or two in my golf bag just in case.
A good beginner glove is affordable and worth having every round. Here’s my article telling you the best ones I’ve tried to far.
Golf Balls, Tees, and Other Essentials
Golf balls and tees might seem simple, but they’re essential to have in your golf bag. As a beginner, you’re going to lose balls, and that’s part of the process. Using affordable, beginner-friendly golf balls makes learning less stressful. Tees are also something you use constantly, especially on par 4s and par 5s.
I also keep a ball marker and a towel in my bag. These small items help you feel more prepared and part of the game. If you want to learn more about these essentials click here.
Final Thoughts
My golf bag isn’t perfect, and I’m still learning every time I play. But building my golf bag over time has been part of what made golf so enjoyable. You don’t need the most expensive equipment to enjoy the game. You just need clubs and gear that help you feel comfortable and confident.
Golf is a process, and every round is a chance to improve. Having a bag you trust makes that process a lot more fun.
